Five Ways to Keep Your Teeth Healthy
Some may think that the key factors to a healthy smile merely is by flossing and brushing. There is a good chance that you have been told you need to floss every day and brush your teeth twice a day. Although these are crucial factors, you still need to take care of other aspects on your teeth such as, your diet, taking care of your tongue and fluoride use, as well as the mouthwash and toothbrush that is best for your needs. In this article, you will learn five ways that can help make your teeth healthy and smile looking great.
Brushing Your Tongue
One way to protect your mouth from bacteria is by brushing your tongue. Not only will brushing your tongue help with making your teeth healthy, but it also aids against bad breath. We recommend trying a toothbrush that has a tongue and cheek cleaner. This will help remove any bacteria each time you brush.
Maintaining Your Toothbrush
It is important to rinse off your toothbrush after every cleaning. When you are finished brushing, make sure you store your toothbrush out in the open and in an upright position. It is possible for microorganisms to grow if it is kept in a moist environment; keeping it out in the open will provide lots of airflow throughout the bristles, which will keep them dry. It has been recommended by the American Dental Association to replace your toothbrush when it is no longer effective (typically around three or four months). Another good indication you should get a new toothbrush is if the bristles are worn or frayed.
Be Conscience of Your Beverage Selections
If possible, avoid drinks that have sugar. Sugary juices or soda are notorious for causing teeth to decay. Water and milk are much better options for not only your teeth but your overall health. If you would like to enjoy juice, make sure it is fresh.
Open Up to Your Dentist
Your dentist and the dental staff are there to help you and make sure you receive the care that you deserve. It’s perfectly acceptable (and encouraged) to ask questions or for clarification on anything related to your smile. Seeing your dentist on a regular basis will ensure your smile is getting cared for and is remaining healthy. Feel free to ask your dentist to help you with a flossing and bushing plan if you are unsure what measures you should be taking.
Do not make the mistake of thinking fluoride is just for kids. Fluoride is used as a measure to prevent cavities by hardening tooth enamel. There are different fluoride options such as mouthwashes, toothpastes and even in-office fluoride treatments. Talk with your dentist to learn what fluoride options are the best for you or your family.
