Our Mercury Free Promise
Throughout the years, advancements in healthcare and science have shifted the way that we see items in our daily lives. In the 30’s and 40’s cigarettes were sold as a healthy choice and many doctors endorsed them. There was even a time when smoking was allowed while doctors were performing heart surgeries!
Times have changed as the risks associated with smoking were uncovered. Americans have shifted their mindset to finding the healthiest options out there and asking questions about the things that could potentially cause them harm. One issue that’s come up for debate is the use of mercury in dentistry.
To stay ahead of the curve and prevent any issues, we vow not to use fillings or other dental options that may contain mercury. Here are just a few reasons that we are a mercury-free dental facility.
The Risks of Mercury
The most common place that mercury is found in dentistry is in the use of dental amalgams. In layman’s terms, mercury is found in silver fillings. These fillings are a mixture of mercury, silver, tin, and copper, with mercury making up 50% of the compound.
Dental fillings that contain mercury are potentially dangerous because that mercury can form a vapor that is inhaled by the lungs. Prolonged exposure to mercury can cause adverse effects on the brain and kidneys. Some other side effects of prolonged mercury exposure include anxiety, loss of appetite, tremors, or changes in vision or hearing.
Why Do Dentists Still Use Fillings with Mercury?
You may be wondering why some dentists still use silver fillings if mercury is so dangerous. According to research by the FDA, the low levels of mercury released by dental amalgam fillings have no link to adverse health problems. In fact, according to the same study, the FDA states that dental amalgam fillings are safe for adults and children ages 6 and up.
However, many groups have asked the FDA to reconsider their findings. One large gray area in the research is the effect this low level of mercury vapor has on pregnant women and their unborn children. There is also no conclusive evidence that the mercury vapor from fillings is spread through a mother’s breast milk, a potential risk for infants who are breastfed. Although the FDA’s study doesn’t have data on the potential risk, it should be noted that nursing mothers who are exposed to mercury vapor in their home are often told not to breastfeed due to the risk.
