Gum disease not only affects blood glucose levels, but it also contributes to the progression of diabetes.  People with diabetes are at a higher risk of an infection caused by the bacteria found in our mouths and have a decreased ability to fight the infections that bacteria may cause.
  • Preterm labor and Low Birth Weight. According to the Journal of Periodontology, gum disease can lead to premature labor and low birth weight in newborns.  During pregnancy, all the nutrients the mother consumes are shared with her baby in the womb. A build-up of bacteria can circulate in the bloodstream and get absorbed in the body of the baby, which in turn may cause preterm labor or low birth weight.
